Android Battery Draining Fast? How to Find the Cause and Fix It (2026)

Fix fast battery drain on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones: find the app responsible, limit background use, and know when the battery itself is worn out.

Quick verdict

Start with the battery usage screen to find the app behind the drain, restrict or remove it, then restart and update. If nothing changes after a few days, the battery may simply be worn.

Fast battery drain on Android usually comes from software, not a dead battery. One app misbehaving, a pile of background activity or a recent update is the more common story. The fix is to find the culprit first, then deal with it.

If you’re in a hurry: open your battery usage screen, spot the app near the top that you barely use, restrict its background activity (or uninstall it), then restart the phone and install any pending updates.

Menus differ between brands and software versions. Google says some of its steps only work on Android 14 and up, and Samsung warns that menu names and paths vary by model and software version. If a path doesn’t match your screen, search for it in Settings.

Wait a few days first if you just set up or updated

Google says battery optimisation can take a few weeks to fully take effect after a new setup or a factory reset. It also says some extra drain after a software update is normal while the phone finishes optimising. Samsung says much the same: use may run higher for the first few days after setup, then settle.

If the drain is still unusual after a few days, carry on below.

Fix it on a Google Pixel

Run battery diagnostics (Pixel 6 and later)

Google’s help page lists a built-in check. Open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics and choose Battery draining too quickly.

Find the app that’s using the most

  1. Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
  2. Tap View by apps for a per-app breakdown.
  3. For every app at once, open Settings > Apps > App battery usage.

Limit background use for a problem app

Tap the app, then Allow background usage, and choose Optimized. Google recommends leaving Optimized on for most apps, since turning optimisation off can let an app use more battery in the background.

Keep Adaptive Battery on

Open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Adaptive Battery and turn on Use Adaptive Battery if it’s off. Google says it may reduce performance and delay notifications in exchange for longer battery life.

Force stop a misbehaving app

Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps, pick the app, then tap Force stop and OK. Google says not to force stop essential apps, and that it isn’t available for every app. Google Play services can’t be force stopped or uninstalled.

Uninstall the app

Touch and hold the app, tap Remove App, then Delete App and Delete. Use Uninstall to remove it from the phone entirely.

Turn on Battery Saver when you need it

For a bad day, swipe down and tap the Battery Saver tile. To trigger it automatically, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Schedule and reminders. Google says Extreme Battery Saver (Pixel 3 and later) pauses apps you haven’t marked as essential, and paused apps won’t send notifications. Google notes some of these steps work only on Android 11 and up.

Restart and update

Restart with the Power button (Pixel 5a and earlier, long press) or Power + Volume up (Pixel 6 and later). Then check Settings > System > Software update, and update apps in the Google Play Store under your profile icon > Manage apps & devices.

Fix it on a Samsung Galaxy

Find the drain

Samsung’s support page says to open Settings > Battery, tap the battery graph and select the app. If it’s one you rarely use, press and hold it, tap Uninstall, then OK.

Turn off what you aren’t using

Swipe down from the top right to open the Quick panel and switch off features such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you don’t need them. Samsung also lists a weak network signal as a cause of faster drain.

Run Device care optimisation

Open Settings > Device care and tap Optimise now. Samsung says this removes unnecessary files and background apps.

Put rarely used apps to sleep

Go to Settings > Battery > Background usage limits, choose Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps, tap the plus icon and add apps you seldom open. Samsung’s warning: deep sleeping apps don’t run in the background at all and only work when you open them manually.

Turn on Power saving

Open Settings > Battery > Power saving. Samsung says it limits background data for unused apps and turns off high-power features such as Always On Display.

Turn down the easy things

Samsung’s older battery tips page (last updated June 2021, so labels may differ on newer One UI releases) suggests lowering brightness from the notification panel, shortening Settings > Display > Screen Timeout, and turning off app sync you don’t need.

When it’s the battery, not the software

Software fixes can’t bring back lost capacity. Samsung calls the battery a consumable whose capacity falls with charge cycles. Our guide to checking Android battery health shows where to find the status on a Pixel and a Galaxy and when replacement makes sense.

If unusual drain continues for days on a Pixel, Google’s page says to contact support. As a last resort it lists a factory data reset, and warns that it deletes all data and apps, so back up first.

The bottom line

Work in order: wait out the post-update period, find the app, limit or remove it, restart, update. That order fixes most software-driven drain without losing anything. If the phone still can’t last a day, check the battery’s health before you blame the apps.

If you also carry an iPhone, our iPhone battery-saving settings guide covers the same ground there.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Android battery draining so fast all of a sudden?

Both Google and Samsung say extra drain is normal for a few days after setting up a phone or installing a software update, while the phone optimises. If it continues past that, look for a single app at the top of the battery usage list.

How do I see which app is using the most battery on a Pixel?

Per Google, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and tap View by apps. Settings > Apps > App battery usage lists every app.

How do I see which app is draining the battery on a Samsung Galaxy?

Samsung's support page says to open Settings > Battery, tap the battery graph, then select an app to see its battery usage.

Should I force stop apps to save battery?

Google lists force stop as a step for a problem app, but warns not to force stop essential apps and notes it isn't available for every app. It's a test for one misbehaving app, not a routine habit.

Can a worn battery cause fast drain?

Yes. Samsung calls the battery a consumable component whose capacity falls with charge cycles and can't be restored. Check battery health before spending money on other fixes.
