iPhone Duo in India: Should You Buy Apple's ₹3 Lakh Foldable?
Apple's first foldable costs ₹2,99,900 in India. What the iPhone Duo gets right, where it falls short, and who should actually buy one.

Quick verdict
Buy the iPhone Duo only if you really want a phone that opens into a small tablet and the price won't hurt. The hardware is superb, but it costs ₹1.2 lakh more than an iPhone 18 Pro Max, has weaker cameras and no Face ID, and some early units have had inner-screen failures.
Apple spent years watching Samsung, Google and everyone else make folding phones. Now it has finally made one, and the iPhone Duo went on sale in India on 23 October, starting at ₹2,99,900.
That’s a lot of money for any phone. So the real question isn’t whether the iPhone Duo is impressive. It clearly is. The question is whether it’s worth three lakh rupees to you.
We read every major review, went through Apple’s spec sheets, and followed the early reports from owners. Here’s the honest version.
What the iPhone Duo actually is
Closed, it’s a slightly stubby iPhone with a 5.4-inch screen. Open it like a book and you get a 7.6-inch display, roughly the size of a small iPad mini. Apple says that inner screen has 50% more area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Inside is the same A20 Pro chip you’ll find in the iPhone 18 Pro, and it runs iOS with some iPad-style tricks, the biggest being two apps side by side for the first time on an iPhone.
Reasons to buy it
The big screen is genuinely great. This is the whole point, and Apple nailed it. Reading, watching videos, editing documents, browsing with Safari and Notes open side by side: everything feels less cramped. 9to5Mac’s reviewer ended up using the inner display about 60% of the time.
You’ll barely see the crease. The crease has been the weak spot of every foldable so far. On the Duo, reviewers say it’s visible mainly on dark screens under bright light, and more noticeable to the touch than to the eye. Wired called it “barely visible.” Most reviewers stopped noticing it within a day or two.
The hardware is beautiful. Open, it’s just 5.2mm thick, the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made. The titanium hinge holds almost any angle, so you can stand it up like a tiny laptop for video calls or recipes. Tom’s Guide called it “the best designed foldable yet,” and PCMag said it has “the best hardware, performance, and battery life of any foldable phone on the market.”
Battery life is better than you’d expect. Two screens usually means poor battery life, but not here, for most people. PCMag measured 18 hours 15 minutes of video playback, the best of any foldable it has tested. CNET finished a heavy day with 29% left; 9to5Mac usually ended at about 20%.
It’s water resistant. IP68 means it can survive a drop in the pool, which still isn’t a given on folding phones.
Reasons to skip it
The price, especially in India. ₹2,99,900 is ₹1,20,000 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max (₹1,79,900) and about ₹1.2 lakh more than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 (₹1,79,999). That gap alone buys a very good laptop. And the 2TB model costs around ₹4.5 lakh.
The cameras are a step down. You get two 48MP cameras, a main and an ultra-wide, but no telephoto lens. The main camera’s 2x crop is decent, but anything further loses detail fast. 9to5Mac called the main camera “a notch below” the iPhone 18 Pro, and The Verge found photos looked “crunchier” with weaker colour in low light. Pro video features like ProRes and Apple Log are missing too. If you buy an iPhone mainly for its camera, the 18 Pro Max is the better phone for less money.
No Face ID. You unlock it with a Touch ID sensor in the side button. It works fine, but if you’ve used Face ID for years, it takes getting used to. Several reviewers said this was the hardest adjustment.
The early screen problems are real. Within days of launch, some owners reported white lines and cracks on the inner screen near the hinge, sometimes after only a handful of folds. On 26 October Apple acknowledged an issue affecting “a small number of units” and asked affected customers to contact AppleCare for a replacement. It hasn’t said what’s causing it. Out of warranty in the US, replacing the inner display costs $999.
Apps aren’t all ready. Apple’s own apps look great on the big screen, but plenty of third-party apps don’t yet. Until developers update them, apps like Disney+ show up in a smaller window with thick black bars. It’ll improve, but right now it’s patchy.
It’s heavy, and it can get warm. At 254g it’s slightly heavier than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and 11.3mm thick when closed. Gizmodo’s reviewer complained it made their front pocket sag. The Verge and 9to5Mac both noticed it running warmer than the 18 Pro.
You’ll be waiting a while. Demand is huge. Delivery dates in India have slipped to late January 2027 for some models.
The first-generation problem
The iPhone Duo is version one of a brand-new kind of iPhone. Apple struggled with production yields before launch, the inner-screen issue isn’t fully explained yet, and app support is still catching up.
None of that makes it a bad phone. But first-generation Apple products usually get much better in their second year: think of the first Apple Watch, or the first iPad. Reports suggest Apple is already testing a future Duo with Face ID. Even Wired, which liked the phone, said “it may be prudent to wait for the Duo 2.”
Who should buy the iPhone Duo
- You read, watch or work on your phone a lot, and want a bigger screen without carrying an iPad
- You’re deep in Apple’s world and have been waiting for an iPhone that folds
- You can comfortably afford it and are happy being an early adopter, quirks and all
Who should skip it
- You care most about photos and video. Get the iPhone 18 Pro Max and save ₹1.2 lakh.
- You want a foldable but don’t mind Android. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 costs far less and Samsung’s foldables are on their eighth generation.
- You want a phone that will just work for four or five years without surprises. Wait for the Duo 2, or at least until the screen issue is understood.
If you’re buying one anyway
- Get AppleCare+. With an inner screen that costs about $999 to replace in the US, this is one phone where extended cover clearly makes sense.
- Check the screen in the first few days. If you see lines, hear cracking when you open it, or the hinge feels off, go to Apple straight away while you’re well within the return window.
- Compare offers. Retailers like Croma have run bank and exchange deals that cut the effective price noticeably.
- Plan your eSIM. The Duo has no physical SIM slot. Jio, Airtel and Vi all support eSIM, but convert yours before you need it.
The bottom line
The iPhone Duo is the most exciting iPhone in years, and by most accounts the best-made foldable you can buy. But at ₹2,99,900, with a weaker camera than cheaper iPhones and an unexplained screen issue, it’s a phone for enthusiasts with deep pockets, not a sensible upgrade for most people.
If you’ve been dreaming of a folding iPhone and the money won’t sting, you’ll probably love it. Everyone else should let the early adopters test it for a year, and pick up a better, cheaper Duo 2.

It starts at ₹2,99,900 for 256GB. The 512GB model is ₹3,24,900, the 1TB is ₹3,74,900, and the 2TB model costs about ₹4.5 lakh. Bank offers and exchange deals at retailers can bring the effective price down.
Does the iPhone Duo have Face ID?
No. Apple put Touch ID in the side button so it works whether the phone is folded or open. If you wear an Apple Watch, it can unlock the phone for you too.
Is the crease visible?
Barely, according to most reviews. You'll spot it on dark screens in bright light, and you can feel it when scrolling, but reviewers say they stopped noticing it after a day or two.
What is the inner screen problem, and has Apple fixed it?
Some early owners reported cracks and bright lines on the inner display near the hinge. On 26 October Apple acknowledged an issue affecting a small number of units and asked affected customers to contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple hasn't confirmed the cause or announced a formal repair programme.
Will the eSIM-only design work in India?
Yes. Jio, Airtel and Vi all support eSIM on iPhones. You'll just need to convert your physical SIM to an eSIM with your carrier during setup.
Should I wait for the iPhone Duo 2?
If you aren't in a hurry, probably yes. First-generation hardware tends to improve quickly, and reports suggest Apple is already testing a version with Face ID. Nothing about the Duo 2 is confirmed yet, though.
